This talk will discuss the importance of aerosols in disease transmission, a topic that Dr. Jiménez has been working on with world health leaders since March 2020. It will explore the reasons why many scientists think that COVID-19 transmission is dominated by aerosols, followed by a small fraction of airborne respiratory droplets (from coughing and sneezing), and only a minor fraction of transmission by surfaces. The roots of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) extreme resistance to the predominance of aerosol transmission, which has its roots in a century of denial of the role of aerosols in disease transmission, will be addressed. In addition, Dr. Jiménez will make recommendations about how to better protect ourselves from COVID-19 in the coming months, and other respiratory illnesses in the future.
Dr. José Luis Jiménez was born in 1968 in Zaragoza, Spain, where he studied Industrial Engineering. He earned his doctorate in engineering from MIT, and is currently Professor of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His research focuses on advanced real-time aerosol measurement methods, with measurements on NASA aircraft, as well as mathematical models. He is a highly cited researcher (h = 122) and an Honorary Member of the American Association for Aerosol Research and the American Geophysical Union. Since March 2020, he has been a member of the Morawska-Milton group that is researching and working to convince the WHO and other organizations of the importance of the spread of COVID-19 by aerosols.
